Effects of Iodine Supplementation of Ewes on Survival and Growth of Lambs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ewes were injected intramuscularly with 1 ml iodised oil at mating or during the first two months of pregnancy to determine if marginal iodine deficiency contributed to the high mortality of newborn lambs in Victoria. Iodine treatment markedly increased milk iodine concentration of ewes. In nine of ten trials conducted in 1979 and 1980 at Ararat, Hamilton, Langi Kal Kal, Ruffy, Rutherglen and Trawalla, iodine supplementation of ewes had no effect on lamb survival, growth of lambs to weaning, and ewe wool production. At Trawalla in 1979 goitrous lambs were born to control ewes, and there was a marked difference in lamb survival between control and treated groups in one of two trials. In one of three years at Hamilton milk iodine concentrations of control ewes less than 80 pg/l indicated a marginal iodine deficiency and their newborn lambs had lower serum thyroxine concentrations than lambs of treated ewes, but there were no significant differences in birthweights and survival of newborn lambs between the groups. The trials indicated that iodine deficiency was not a major factor limiting the survival of newborn lambs and that widespread iodine supplementation of ewes would not produce any major shifts in productivity.

Performance, Health Status, and Colostrum Yield of Twin-Bearing Afshari Ewes as Well as Growth and Survival of Their Offspring are not Affected by Increasing Dietary Metabolizable Protein in Late Pregnancy
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two dietary metabolizable protein (MP) concentrations on the performance and health status of Afshari ewes and survival and growth of their lambs during late pregnancy. For 6 weeks prior to lambing, 32 Afshari ewes were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments, containing low (LMP) or high (HMP) MP concentrations. The ewes in LMP (n=16)...

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of selenium (Se) supplementation of mature ewes in the period from day -14 to day 90 post mating on Se status, productivity and viability of ewes and their offspring. Multiparous crossbred ewes (n = 82) were randomly assigned to receive a standard dried grass-based diet (control) or dried grass diet supplemented with 1 g of selenised yeas...
متن کاملSerum total iodine concentrations in pasture-fed pregnant ewes and newborn lambs challenged by iodine supplementation and goitrogenic kale.
Iodine deficiency can impair the reproductive performance of livestock and affect perinatal mortality of offspring, yet diagnosis of deficiency is complicated and guidelines for I supplementation are imprecise. We challenged pasture-grazing pregnant ewes with a long-acting I supplement and a goitrogenic forage, then monitored their I status during gestation and lactation and in their lambs from...

Two experiments were conducted to examine effects of d-á-tocopherol (vitamin E) on colostrum immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers and preweaning lamb performance. Trial 1 consisted of 86 Suffolk ewes receiving either no vitamin E (control) or 1500 IU vitamin E on d-28 prepartum. From the 86 ewes, a subset of 25 ewes was randomly chosen for an intensive analysis of ewe serum and colostrum IgG and lamb ...
